Atlanta Tribune: The Magazine is proud to announceThe Herndon Home will be celebrating 105 years of establishment by hosting a Centennial Celebration. The event will be held at The Atlanta History Center on September 11, 2011.
The Herndon Home has been a critical and historically significant asset in the African-American community, the City of Atlanta and our nation. It was the home of one of the country’s most important and accomplished entrepreneurs
Former slave, Alonzo Franklin Herndon, founded what would become the Atlanta Life Financial Group (“Atlanta Life”). The company that Herndon founded with a $140 investment was the outgrowth of one of many generous associations catering to low and moderate-income customers. Atlanta Life became a trusted household name to Black families. In its bequest of service, Atlanta Life has made an indelible impact on Atlanta’s business and political communities.
The chairman of the Herndon Foundation, William J. Stanley believes this centennial celebration is very important for the community and the nation to recognize, saying, “The Herndon Foundation is the guardian of the Herndon Legacy. “It is our privilege and responsibility to perpetuate Mr. Herndon’s entrepreneurial spirit and philanthropic legacy throughout the Atlanta community and across these United States.”
