Top News: Small Business Hiring, Minimum Wage, and Google’s Glass and Airports

“Gauging Small Business Hiring in January”

The U.S. economy added 113,000 payroll jobs in January, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. How many of those jobs were at small businesses? That depends on who’s counting, and how they define small. For the most part, last month’s small business hiring surveys indicated employers are likely to add more jobs this year than they did in 2013.

“Making the Economic Case for More Than the Minimum Wage”

In his January 2014 State of the Union address, President Obama called for a new federal minimum wage of $10.10 an hour. The year before, in the same speech, he proposed a $9 minimum wage. Obama didn’t provide an economic rationale for the increase so much as a marketing one, ad-libbing: “It’s easy to remember: 10-10!” If instant recall is the primary goal, why not $10.04, in a salute to Smokey and the Bandit? Or $10.66, the year of the Norman conquest of England? Or better still, $10.99 after the IRS form?

“Google’s Glass and the Future of Frequent-Flyer Flattery”

Virgin Atlantic began a six-week trial Tuesday that will equip its staff at London’s Heathrow Airport with the eyewear gadgets in an effort to more quickly shuttle first- and business-class passengers through the airport and into a separate wing at Terminal 3 reserved for high-end travelers.
