Georgia is one of three states to receive a $1 million grant to help students in high-demand fields graduate on time.
Recently, Gov. Nathan Deal announced that the Lumina Foundation and Complete College America would be awarding this grant to provide assistance for the state’s “Guided Pathways to Success” program, designed to reduce the amount of unnecessary credits students accumulate and push students toward graduating within four years, as opposed to six. Helping students toward the four-year mark, GPS offers streamlined scheduling, advising and structured degrees. The GPS program is currently used at Georgia State University and has increased graduation rates by 20 percent in the last 10 years.
The $1 million in grant funding would not only reduce the amount of debt students incur, but it would benefit the Complete College Georgia initiative which, having launched three years ago, aims to increase the number of college graduates in the state by 250,000 by the year 2020.
