Why I Will Always Exercise

Why am I doing this? 

That’s the question that pops up from time to time. What keeps me going year after year? I simply think of the alternative.

The alternative, for me, puts at least another 60 pounds of fat on my frame. Even as I write this, it’s unbelievable to me that that was my existence; however, one of the biggest pains in my life (mentally and physically) has now become my biggest asset.

How could something so painful become an asset?

It’s simple — victory is sweet. Even though I used ridicule as a motivating factor to be at my best, the victory was against my inner self. I could tell you once you’ve made a decision to “stick with it” but it’s much deeper than that. You must continue to talk yourself into sticking with your plan. Let me tell you this; don’t feel bad when this occurs because it’s a part of the process. There are times when you will feel motivated and nothing will stop youand there will be times when it seems nothing is working, so you feel as if you might as well quit. You must accept that this will always be a process; the sooner you realize that, the quicker the results will come because your focus will be long term and before you know it … change!

That’s easy for you to say now, you’ve lost your weight.

Here’s the truth; you’re correct but let me change your statement. It’s easier for me to say but never easy. Why? Because those inner thoughts never disappear, you simply manage them to the best of your knowledge at any given time. For instance, if you’ve been in the fitness industry as long as I have, I know precisely what I need to do in order to get in shape and that includes strength training, cardio, yoga, stretching and meditation; the full spectrum because they all lend a hand into my overall well being.

On the other hand, if you are new to fitness then I recommend putting your weakness on the back burner and solely focusing on the area you like most simply because chances are you’re more likely to stick with something you feel relatively positive about versus something you completely despise.

I don’t want to become an exercise fanatic and do it the rest of my life.

Neither do I, but what are your choices? We all have done the song and dance with regard to exercise but the bottom line is, our bodies are everything to us. The only time we focus on our health is when something goes wrong or we get out of shape. I ignored my health for a very long time by living in a state of denial, which to this day still boggles my mind.

I plead to you to not do what I did, but do something similar to what I now do. Don’t wait too long.
