On November 20,2024 East Point Police were working an accident on I-285 SB in the number 1 lane (far left lane by the median wall). While the patrol units were sitting stationary with their emergency equipment activated, a tractor-trailer approached the incident scene at an unknown rate of speed in the number 1 lane. The tractor-trailer struck the 3 patrol units before coming to a stop. 2 East Point Police Officers were outside of their vehicle where 1 Officer was struck by their patrol unit. A 3rd Officer was sitting inside their vehicle when the tractor-trailer struck the driver’s side of the patrol unit.
All 3 patrol units were totaled in the collision.
Tractor-trailers are not authorized to be traveling in the number 1 lane on I-285 northbound or southbound.
2 East Point Police Officer’s were taken from the scene by GRADY EMS for treatment.
Georgia State Patrol SCRT (Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team) arrived on scene to investigate the incident.
