Each time I meet with a new client, I always like to get some history from them. This way, I know exactly what I’m dealing with which makes it easier to help them deal with any obstacles that may come.
The biggest obstacle by far is the constant temptation from the food industry along with holding yourself accountable, all while you know these temptations are right around the corner for five dollars!
As soon as you wake up in the morning and flip on the television, you are greeted with a cheerful commercial to start your day ending with the need to run and get that chicken biscuit or large coffee … might as well get the blueberry muffin, too. Then, as you head into the office you see six billboards advertising the special combo deals you can get at most fast food restaurants. Before you pull into the office you realize you need some gas, so you might as well get some now because you won’t feel like it when you get off work. What awaits you in the gas station? Every piece of candy, doughnuts, sandwiches, pretzels, drinks, hot dogs, chips … and pizza!
How can I win with all of this around me?
You do so by being held accountable. If you are not in a position to hire a personal fitness coach, then be your own accountability coach with regard to the daily temptations you face.
First thing you need to do is set some weekly goals with regard to nutrition. What I always recommend is stacking the deck in a way to guarantee some sort of progress. When it comes to my eating habits, I started out by having four “healthier”/non-cheat days and three cheat days. If you look at a full week, you will quickly see why this process will keep you going in the right direction as long as you abide by the rules and goals you have set each week.
How do I fight the daily temptations and hold MYSELF accountable?
By doing a drive-by. You must drive by these temptations if it happens to be one of your healthier days, and you must decide which days are healthy and which days are your cheat days. Do not randomly pick the day as it goes because without structure everything will go haywire. Once you’ve decided on your days of the week, the last step is to hold yourself accountable.
- Create another email account
- Each time you put anything into your body, take a picture and email it to yourself.
- At the end of each week, take a look at what you’ve put in your body.
You’ll quickly be able to see whether your choices are getting you closer to your goal or further. Do this consistently and you will not be able to deny yourself the truth because it’s right there in pictures!
