Here we are again…
Another year in the book. Have you made your resolution? If so, I bet you really mean it this year, don’t you? You can probably sense my sarcasm, but there is a part of me that knows you really do mean it this year. With that being said, let me tell you why you’ll fail again.
The entire notion of planning to have long-term success with a spur-of-the-moment thought is setting you up for failure. If you’ve never had long- term success with a resolution then chances are — that changing this year is quite unlikely. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be making this same one another year. How do you expect to get a different result repeating the same steps? Let me repeat something I’ve said in the past: In order to set yourself up for long-term results ask, “Why am I doing this…really?”
You have to dig deeper.
After 25 plus years of exercising, imagine how deep I must dig in order to keep my enthusiasm high about going to the gym. There is one thing I use as the foundation of my fitness regime and that’s to focus on how I feel. Focusing on this one thing makes every decision cut and dry.
“Should I eat these cookies?”
“Should I go to the gym?”
“Should I drink another glass of wine?”
Keeping this thought in your memory bank will do wonders for both your short- and long-term goals because every decision you make will have some form of an aftertaste either positive or negative and that’s what you want. Why? Because you’ll need all the help you can get when the interest begins to fade in February, March, April and May. Happy New Year!
