Fastlane: 2015 Infiniti Qx70

By Brian Armstead

Take a time proven 3.7-liter V6 engine, wrap it in curvy yet purposeful sheetmetal, install the latest “Intelligent” all-wheel drive, and infuse it with so much technology you wonder if it’s a NASA creation, and what do you have?

The 2015 Infiniti QX70.

Yes, my friends, Infiniti is once again marching towards luxury dominance with a full line of luxury Coupes, Convertibles, Hybrids, Sedans, Crossovers and Sport Utility Vehicles. From the Q40 to QX80, they’ve got a vehicle that will suit your needs, even if the nomenclature with all vehicles beginning with “Q,” is to me, somewhat confusing.

Alphabet soup aside, what you get with your Xs and Qs is a terrific Crossover Utility Vehicle that’s geared to perform at a very impressive level on all types of surfaces, and will also hold a decent amount of personal gear for your active lifestyle. In truth, the proper name for this “crossover” should be Active Lifestyle Vehicle, as the raked styling of the QX trends towards excitement, outdoor activities and sport-oriented driving.

Press the “start” button on the dash, and the 3.7-liter V6 growls like a mean cat. The QX’s exhaust is tuned towards performance as well, and may be too loud for those who prefer a more subtle driving experience. But for those who like carving switchback roads, the V6, performance exhaust, all-wheel drive handling and sophisticated independent front and multi-link rear suspension all meld to make the QX70 a road runner.

But this is an Infiniti, which means you also get a boatload of luxury with your performance.  Leather, heated 10-way seats, one-touch power glass moonroof, dual zone climate control, power rear liftgate, black lacquer interior trim, and power folding and heated outside mirrors are among the standards that make life behind the wheel more pleasant than in your typical Crossover Ute.

Base priced at $47,300, the QX offers an array of option packages, all with very decent prices. The “Technology, Premium and Sport Packages ($2950, $4300, and $3550, respectively) feature goodies like Lane Departure Warning, Brake Assist with Forward Collision Warning, Hard Drive Navigation, Around View Monitor with Moving Object Detection (great for seeing kids and pets when you are in reverse), Bluetooth streaming audio, 21” dark finished wheels, contrast interior stitching and much, much more.

Final tally for my test QX was a very reasonable $59,535. Given Infiniti’s long history of performance and reliability, the 2015 QX70 is a sound purchase choice.  AT
