Conservative political commentator Candace Owens, who once referred to Donald Trump as “the savior” of the free world, said she began to “question” who the former president was “for the first time” after he was rude to her during a personal interaction.

On her Daily Wire show, Owens shared why her feelings changed toward Trump as the 45th president reportedly gears up to announce his 2024 presidential bid.

The conservative firebrand said Trump “actually got upset” with her after she commented on an interview in which he defended COVID-19 vaccines. Owens defended his vaccine stance in an Instagram video, saying that people forget “how old Trump is” and that he’s from a generation who “came from a time before TV, before the internet, before being able to conduct independent research.”

According to Owens, the former president misunderstood her comments after The Daily Beast covered the video, headlining the story: “Candace Owens: Trump Is Pro-Vax Because He’s ‘Too Old’ to Understand the Internet.” He got “mad” and was “quite rude to her” during their next interaction, Owens said.

Owens said she wanted to share the “personal story” on her Daily Wire show because the incident with Trump made her “for the first time question him as a person.”

The political commentator claimed Trump twisted a “completely kind and fair interview.”

“That is not being a leader, that is not owning things that you did wrong, that is not owning that you misunderstood something about your base,” Owens said. “That’s not growing, that’s not developing.”

Owens said the interaction made her realize that Trump was “not listening” and it led her to question whether he was becoming “too angry.”

She went on to suggest that the former president was “holding onto a vengeful spirit” and that he may not have a clear vision for his 2024 presidential bid.

“It needs to be more than, ‘I’m back,'” Owens said.

Her comments come after a number of Trump-backed, high-profile GOP candidates lost and severely underperformed in the midterm elections.

Owens said Trump needs to exercise “a little more humility” when he gets something wrong, noting that the midterm results show that Trump and his base are “not sure.”
