Fulton County leaders on Wednesday unanimously approved $300 million in funding for a new hospital in South Fulton, part of a more than $1 billion project led by Grady Health System, which will also rely on its own financing and philanthropic support.
Grady said the new medical campus is intended to expand access to high-quality care, ease capacity constraints and improve overall community health in an area long considered a healthcare desert. The project will be built in phases, beginning with a medical office building expected to open by 2028. That facility will include imaging services, a surgery center, specialty clinics, rehabilitation, pharmacy services and a full pediatric floor operated by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
An acute care hospital is slated to follow by 2031. It will include 200 beds and units for critical, intermediate and acute care, and is expected to function as a Level 3 trauma center. The campus will be located near a standalone emergency department on Campbellton Fairburn Road in Union City, which is scheduled to open in June and will later be integrated into the hospital.
County Commission Chairman Robb Pitts said the investment addresses a critical need in a fast-growing region where residents often travel long distances for care, adding that closing the gap “will save lives.”
The announcement also coincided with a leadership transition at Grady. President and CEO John Haupert will retire at the end of the year after 15 years, transitioning to an advisory role in 2027. Chief Operating Officer Anthony Saul will succeed him as president and CEO on Jan. 1, 2027.
